Art Response 11

Description

This artist response is to CUBI by David Smith (Piece I am responding to www.areaofdesign.com/americani…). Quotation from the textbook: “The forms of the vertical CUBI series (fig.32-90) were actually determined by standardized, precut sizes of stainless-steel sheets. In photographs they sometimes look coldly industrial, but when observed outdoors as Smith intended, their highly burnished surfaces show the gestural marks of the sculptor’s tools upon them, and reflect and refract the sun in different ways depending on the time of day, weather condition and distance from which they are viewed. Vaguely anthropomorphic like giant totemic figures, the sculptures are surprising organic when seen at close range.” (Stokstad, Marilyn, and Michael Cothren. Art History. Fifth Edition ed. Vol. 2. 1080. Print.)

In response to this piece, I took a method of making paper folding three dimensional shapes I learned in “three dimensional design” class last semester. I made a bit of those shapes and put them together into a totem like structure, then I painted the object in blank paint. I made sure that while making and painting it I kept the paint strokes messing and the gluing a bit sloppy. This was about how the imperfections and the construction changes the look of the piece with different types of lighting and in the light.

Honestly, the pictures do not really show that, I have tried to get cleaner pictures. I will try and get better images and replace the picture later on.
